In most cases, the baseboard for a fiddle yard does not have to be as deep as the rest of the layout. In the room-sized oval layout on the left, the baseboards are thin on one side and fat on the other, so that more scenery can be incorporated on the station side. If the fiddle yard baseboards are narrow, there is no reason why the main line cannot be run through a thin scenic section in front of the fiddle yard as shown on the right. The fiddle yard could be hidden under removable scenery, but it is easier to allow a little bit of room behind the layout in order to walk up and down the fiddle yard.
